The results changed with the host firearm. On the bolt-action rifles, repeated firing-order changes and suppressor swaps produced no consistent audible winner. On the AR-15, however, the reviewer and two additional listeners concluded that the CAT JL was quieter.

Testing the PTR VENT 1 and CAT JL Across Multiple Rifles
The Silencer Analytics comparison asked whether either suppressor would establish a clear audible advantage across different calibers and firearm types. Instead of testing on a single host, the reviewer began with .308 and .223/5.56 bolt-action rifles and then transitioned to a gas-operated AR-15.
The evaluation was a subjective field comparison based on what the reviewer and other listeners heard. It was not presented as an instrumented sound-pressure-level test. Within those limits, the reviewer attempted to make the comparison consistent by using the same ammunition within each test, alternating which suppressor was fired first and swapping the suppressors between sides.
Those changes were important because the perceived result sometimes shifted with the firing order or suppressor position. The methodology also revealed the central finding of the video: the two suppressors were difficult to distinguish on the bolt guns, but the listeners heard a clearer difference after moving to the AR-15.
.308 Bolt-Action Test: Nearly Identical Sound Performance
For the .308 comparison, the reviewer used two McMillan-chassised bolt-action rifles. He described one as an M40-inspired build and the other as an “urban sniper”-style rifle. Both suppressors were tested with the same ammunition.
During the first sequence, the reviewer thought the CAT JL had a deeper pitch, although he described both suppressors as “pretty darn quiet.” After reversing the order, he said he could not hear a difference.
The reviewer then swapped the suppressors between the two rifles to account for possible differences between the hosts or listening positions. His impressions remained close and changed between strings. The VENT 1 appeared to have the deeper tone during one sequence, while the CAT JL sounded marginally better during another.

PTR VENT 1 vs. CAT JL on .223/5.56 Bolt Guns
The next comparison used two bolt-action rifles with PMC X-TAC 55-grain full-metal-jacket boat-tail ammunition. As in the .308 test, the VENT 1 and CAT JL were fired back to back before being swapped between sides.
The reviewer initially thought the PTR VENT 1 might have performed slightly better, though he was not certain. He also described the first-round pop as the same between the two suppressors.
After switching their positions, the reviewer characterized the suppressors as sounding identical. He later considered whether the CAT JL might have a slight advantage, but additional firing did not produce a dependable separation.
The changing impressions are important to the result. On both .308 and .223/5.56 bolt-action rifles, the suppressors were close enough that the reviewer could not confidently identify an overall sound winner.
“They are so neck and neck that I truly can’t tell which one sounds better,” he concluded before moving to the AR-15.
The 16-Inch AR-15 Produced a Clearer Result
Because the bolt-action tests remained too close to call, the reviewer moved both suppressors to a 16-inch AR-15 with its gas setting fully open. He continued using PMC X-TAC ammunition and added two listeners to provide more perspectives.
The PTR VENT 1 was fired first during the initial sequence. All three listeners responded that the CAT JL was quieter. The reviewer then reversed the firing order and repeated the comparison, but the group reached the same conclusion.
Unlike the small and inconsistent differences heard on the bolt guns, the AR-15 result was clear to the participants. The reviewer described the difference as “obvious and undeniable.”
He also found the result unexpected. According to the review, the CAT JL was intended as more of a bolt-action suppressor than a gas-gun model, yet the AR-15 was the host on which it established its clearest perceived sound advantage over the VENT 1.
That result does not mean the CAT JL sounded clearly better in every part of the test. It means that on the specific AR-15 configuration shown in the video, all three listeners consistently concluded that it was quieter. On the bolt guns, the two suppressors remained exceptionally difficult to separate.
Sound Suppression, Tone and First-Round Pop
The test demonstrates why perceived suppressor performance involves more than a simple loud-or-quiet judgment. Tone and first-round pop both affected what the reviewer heard during the bolt-action testing.
In the .308 comparison, the reviewer initially perceived the CAT JL as having a deeper pitch. After the suppressors were swapped, the VENT 1 appeared deeper during another sequence. These changing impressions made it difficult to establish a consistent tonal winner.
During the .223/5.56 bolt-action test, the reviewer described the first-round pop as the same. His preference shifted slightly between individual strings, first leaning toward the VENT 1 and later considering whether the CAT JL had a small advantage.
Only on the AR-15 did the listeners report a clear and repeatable sound-suppression difference. The contrast between the bolt-action and semiautomatic results reinforces the importance of identifying the firearm configuration when discussing a suppressor comparison.
Weight and Back-Pressure Observations
The reviewer also compared weight and back pressure. Using an informal scale, he recalled that the suppressors differed by approximately one-tenth of an ounce. He therefore considered them effectively equal in weight.
Because that measurement was presented casually, it should be treated as an observation about the two test units rather than a definitive manufacturer specification.
For back pressure, the reviewer estimated that the CAT JL produced at least 10% less than the PTR VENT 1. He described that as an impressive reduction. The video did not show an instrumented back-pressure measurement procedure, so the figure should remain attributed to the reviewer and should not be interpreted as an independently verified specification.
The reviewer briefly compared the result with his experience using the CAT ODB. He described the ODB as a good suppressor designed more specifically around lower back pressure, but said it was not as quiet as the CAT JL in his experience.
Does the CAT JL Make the PTR VENT 1 Obsolete?
The reviewer explicitly said it did not. Although he ultimately ranked the CAT JL first for overall sound suppression, he did not advise existing PTR VENT 1 owners to replace their suppressors.
“If you have a PTR Vent 1, you don’t need to run out and buy a CAT.”
That qualification reflects how close the comparison remained across most of the video. On the .308 and .223/5.56 bolt-action rifles, the VENT 1 and CAT JL produced such similar perceived sound performance that repeated firing-order changes and suppressor swaps did not establish a dependable winner.
For someone choosing between the two without already owning either, the reviewer said he would purchase the CAT JL. He based that preference on its clearer perceived sound advantage on the AR-15, his assessment of lower back pressure and the lack of a meaningful weight difference between the test units.
Price was intentionally excluded from the reviewer’s final comparison.
The Reviewer’s Final Verdict
Silencer Analytics concluded that the CAT JL had become his “new overall favorite suppressor” and placed it first in his personal ranking for overall sound suppression. The decisive result came from the 16-inch AR-15, where all three listeners repeatedly identified the CAT JL as quieter than the PTR VENT 1.
The full review was more nuanced than that final ranking alone. On the .308 and .223/5.56 bolt-action rifles, the suppressors performed so similarly to the reviewer’s ears that neither established a consistent advantage. At different points, each model appeared to have a slight edge in pitch or perceived sound, but those impressions changed between strings.
For prospective buyers choosing between the two, the reviewer favored the CAT JL because of its AR-15 sound performance, his assessment of lower back pressure and the effectively equal weight of the test units. For current PTR VENT 1 owners, his conclusion was equally direct: he did not believe the result provided a reason to replace a suppressor he continued to regard highly.
