PTR VENT 2 Review: Sound, Back Pressure and Host Testing

The NFA Review Channel put the PTR VENT 2 through a multi-host 9mm suppressor test, evaluating its sound signature, tone, back pressure, mounting options and performance across several firearm platforms. The review also examines PTR’s 3D-printed titanium construction and Purposely Induced Porosity—PIP—technology.

Testing included a full-size MP5-pattern host, a Beretta 92-series pistol, a Henry lever-action rifle and, in bonus footage, a B&T APC9. The reviewer also used several subsonic ammunition weights to hear how the VENT 2 behaved under different configurations.

PTR VENT 2 Review: Short Summary

The PTR VENT 2 is a full-size, 3D-printed titanium suppressor designed primarily for 9mm. According to the specifications presented in the video, it measures 7.6 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter, with a listed weight of 8.9 ounces. The review also identifies compatibility with .357 Magnum, .38 Special and .300 Blackout, subject to the applicable limitations described by PTR.

Much of the review focuses on the VENT 2’s sound quality. After hearing it on multiple hosts, the reviewer described its tone as “probably the best I’ve ever heard.” He compared its tone profile to that of the much larger GSL Phoenix and said the two sounded almost identical to his ear. He added that he was inclined to consider the VENT 2 quieter, although he presented that as a subjective judgment rather than an instrumented sound-pressure measurement.

The Henry .38 Special lever action produced what the reviewer considered the best sound of the day. Because the action remains closed when fired, there was no ejection-port noise or gas release to compete with the suppressor’s muzzle performance. Results on the Beretta 92-series pistol were more ammunition-dependent. The reviewer encountered some back pressure with one 147-grain load, including unburned granules reaching his shooting glasses. He reported substantially less with the 158-grain ammunition and none with the 165-grain load used in that portion of the test. Despite that variation, he said the pistol still sounded very good.

Overall, the reviewer found little to criticize. The NFA Review Channel’s experience with the VENT 2 began before this filmed review. The reviewer first heard the suppressor at Suppressed Fest 2023 and later encountered PTR again at SHOT Show. PTR subsequently supplied the test unit used in the video.

The reviewer disclosed that prior experience and made clear from the opening that he had already developed a favorable impression of the suppressor. He nevertheless approached the video as an independent evaluation, explaining the product’s construction before testing it on several different hosts.

He also reported letting shooters with widely varying experience levels try the VENT 2 during his travels. According to the reviewer, both newcomers and experienced suppressor owners reacted positively to its performance. Those observations were informal and subjective, but they reinforced his own initial reaction to the suppressor’s tone.

For .300 Blackout, the review cited an eight-inch minimum barrel length and noted that this application is not full-auto rated. Owners should consult PTR’s current product documentation for complete caliber, barrel-length and firing-schedule requirements before selecting a host.

Despite its full-size dimensions, the reviewer emphasized the VENT 2’s relatively low listed weight. Its titanium construction allowed the suppressor to remain under nine ounces before adding a booster or other mounting hardware.

How PTR’s PIP Technology Is Intended to Work

A central part of the review is PTR’s PIP technology, short for Purposely Induced Porosity. The reviewer described the VENT 2 as a monolithic 3D-printed structure in which controlled porosity is incorporated into the internal design.

He compared that porous structure to a sponge. Rather than forcing all propellant gas to travel only through a conventional bore path and a series of solid machined baffles, the design permits gas to interact with porous surfaces inside the suppressor. As the reviewer explained it, this gives gas additional paths through which it can move, slow and cool.

The review positioned this approach within a broader shift toward additive manufacturing. Complex internal geometry that would be difficult or impossible to produce through conventional machining can be formed as part of a single printed structure. According to the reviewer, this provides suppressor designers with more control over gas flow and back pressure without necessarily accepting the degree of sound-performance tradeoff traditionally associated with vented designs.

Those technical explanations reflect the reviewer’s description of the system. The video did not include internal imaging, pressure measurements or instrumented sound testing to independently quantify how much of the observed performance resulted from any one design feature.

Mounting the VENT 2 on Pistols, PCCs and Rifles

The VENT 2’s 1.125×28 rear interface gave the reviewer several mounting options during the test. Although the suppressor ships with a 1/2×28 fixed-barrel adapter, he used additional hardware to move it between hosts.

For the MP5-pattern firearm and other compatible fixed-barrel hosts, the reviewer installed a Rugged Suppressors three-lug mount. He liked its compact internal design and said it added little, if any, noticeable length to the suppressor.

For the Beretta 92-series pistol, he used a Rugged Suppressors booster assembly with a 1/2×28 piston. The combination of fixed-barrel, three-lug and pistol configurations allowed the review to cover a broader range of VENT 2 applications than a single-host sound demonstration would have provided.

Ammunition and Test Hosts

The live-fire portion covered four firearm configurations:

  • A Henry Model X lever-action rifle chambered for .38 Special/.357 Magnum
  • A full-size MP5-pattern firearm
  • A Beretta 92-series pistol
  • A B&T APC9 used for bonus footage

The reviewer said the unsuppressed 9mm footage used 147-grain subsonic ammunition. During the suppressed testing, he rotated through 147-, 158- and 165-grain loads where they were appropriate for the host. He did not identify the exact .38 Special bullet weight during his conclusion, explaining that the ammunition had come from a bulk case and that he would need to verify it later.

The video was a practical listening test rather than a controlled laboratory comparison. It did not present calibrated decibel readings, standardized microphone data or a side-by-side test against another suppressor under identical conditions. Its findings should therefore be understood as the reviewer’s experienced, subjective assessment of sound, tone and gas behavior.

Sound Performance on the Henry .38 Special Lever Action

Of the hosts tested, the reviewer believed the Henry lever action delivered the strongest overall sound result. The closed action prevented gas and sound from escaping through an ejection port during firing, allowing the muzzle signature to stand out more clearly.

He reported hearing the projectile travel through the air and strike the dirt berm downrange. In his assessment, the VENT 2’s report was quiet enough that these secondary sounds became a significant part of what the shooter and recording equipment captured.

This configuration also demonstrated that a suppressor’s perceived performance depends on the entire firearm system. Action noise, ejection-port gas and ammunition can all affect what the shooter hears, even when the same suppressor is used.

VENT 2 Performance on the MP5 Platform

The full-size MP5-pattern host was a close second in the reviewer’s ranking. He said the combination sounded excellent, with the primary remaining disturbance coming from the movement of the bolt carrier and other mechanical noise.

Equally important, the reviewer reported no gas to the face during the MP5 portion. Some smoke was visible, but he attributed it to CLP he had added to the firearm before filming rather than to excessive suppressor blowback. Once the lubricant burned away, he said the smoke cleared.

The MP5 test represented one of the review’s most favorable combinations of sound quality and shooter comfort. In the reviewer’s experience, the VENT 2 controlled the muzzle signature without producing noticeable gas at his face on that host.

Beretta 92 Back Pressure and Ammunition Differences

The Beretta 92-series pistol produced a more nuanced result. Although the reviewer liked its suppressed sound, he experienced some back pressure while using a particular 147-grain subsonic load. He could feel unburned granules striking his glasses and used that experience to reinforce the importance of eye protection.

That behavior did not remain consistent across every load. The reviewer said he noticed little back pressure with the 158-grain ammunition and none with the 165-grain load used during the test.

The variation is important because it prevents the pistol result from being reduced to a simple claim that the VENT 2 either did or did not produce blowback. In this review, gas behavior changed with the ammunition. The host, load and suppressor operated as a system, and changing one variable affected the shooter’s experience.

Tone Compared With the GSL Phoenix

When searching for a familiar reference point, the reviewer compared the VENT 2’s tone to that of the GSL Phoenix. He described the Phoenix as a substantially larger suppressor and said the tone profiles were nearly identical.

The reviewer went slightly further, saying that to his trained ear, he “almost” considered the VENT 2 quieter. That comparison was subjective and was not based on a controlled, simultaneous sound-meter test. Even so, it was one of the review’s strongest observations because of the reviewer’s extensive experience evaluating suppressors.

His broader point was not simply that the VENT 2 sounded quiet. He believed it produced an unusually deep, pleasant tone while delivering that performance in a lighter and more compact package than the suppressor he used as his closest tonal comparison.

Heat Management During Multi-Host Testing

The reviewer repeatedly moved the hot VENT 2 between firearms during the filming session. He specifically noted the suppressor’s dimpled exterior surface and believed the additional surface area helped it dissipate heat between host changes.

The video did not include a timed cooling test or temperature measurements, so this should be treated as a field observation rather than a quantified thermal-performance claim. It was nevertheless a practical detail the reviewer appreciated during an extended day of testing.

For maintenance, he referenced PTR’s published cleaning instructions and characterized the process as a soak-and-wait procedure followed by blowing out the suppressor with compressed air. Owners should follow PTR’s current instructions for approved solutions, intervals and handling procedures.

APC9 Bonus Footage and Ammunition Failure

The B&T APC9 segment was intended to provide an additional downrange sound perspective. The reviewer placed recording equipment so the projectile would pass the microphone before impacting the berm farther downrange, allowing viewers to hear the shot, bullet flight and eventual impact as distinct events.

During the suppressed APC9 firing, however, a cartridge case failed. The event forced the magazine from the firearm, damaged the magazine and opened the grip’s storage door. The reviewer identified the ammunition as a factory-loaded 158-grain product and retained the remaining rounds, spent cases and fragments for examination.

He reported that he was unharmed, aside from ringing ears after the unexpectedly loud event. The reviewer did not attribute the failure to the VENT 2, and the transcript provides no evidence that the suppressor caused it. It should therefore be treated as a separate ammunition or firearm incident that occurred during filming—not as a VENT 2 performance result.

The Reviewer’s Final Verdict on the PTR VENT 2

After testing the VENT 2 on a lever action, an MP5-pattern firearm, a Beretta pistol and an APC9, the reviewer said he struggled to identify a meaningful fault. The Henry produced his favorite sound of the day, the MP5 delivered a close second with no notable gas to the face, and the Beretta remained impressively quiet despite showing ammunition-dependent back pressure.

The VENT 2’s tone was the defining result. The reviewer considered it among the best he had encountered in nearly two decades of suppressor reviews and compared it favorably with the much larger GSL Phoenix. Its light titanium construction, multi-host mounting options and exterior heat-dissipation features added to his positive assessment.

The review also illustrates why suppressor performance cannot be separated from the host and ammunition. Action type affected mechanical and ejection-port noise, while different 9mm loads changed the amount of back pressure felt on the Beretta. Even within an overwhelmingly positive review, those distinctions provide the most useful information for prospective users.
