Silencer Shop tested the PTR VENT Spiritus 5.56i suppressor across four 5.56 firearms, including AR-15s with 10.3-, 12.5- and 14.5-inch barrels and a Mini Fix bolt-action rifle. The evaluation focused on perceived sound suppression, back pressure, recoil, muzzle flash and function across different host configurations.

The reviewers also examined how barrel length, gas-system setup and direct-thread mounting affected the shooting experience. Their test provides a practical look at whether the compact, Inconel Spiritus 5.56i can combine sound reduction with the low-back-pressure performance associated with PTR’s Purposely Induced Porosity technology.

Short Summary

Silencer Shop approached the PTR VENT Spiritus 5.56i with high expectations. The review team had previously responded favorably to other suppressors in the VENT series, and they noted that the Spiritus uses the same underlying Purposely Induced Porosity, or PIP, technology in a smaller, Inconel design intended for more demanding 5.56 use.

Testing began on a 14.5-inch, low-dwell AR-15 firing both 55-grain M193 and 62-grain green-tip ammunition. The reviewers described the rifle as exceptionally quiet for a suppressed 5.56 semiautomatic and repeatedly emphasized the lack of noticeable gas at the shooter. They were equally impressed by the rifle’s recoil behavior, characterizing its movement as comparable to shooting with a muzzle brake.

The Spiritus was then moved to an untuned 10.3-inch Daniel Defense MK18 with a non-adjustable gas block and H2 buffer. As expected, the shorter barrel sounded louder than the 14.5-inch host. Even so, the reviewers considered its performance very good and reported little perceived gas, minimal rifle movement and no cycling problems during their test.

A tuned 12.5-inch AR-15 produced a similarly favorable reaction. The review team observed very little movement while firing and discussed the suppressor’s apparent ability to limit visible flash. They considered that characteristic potentially useful for low-light shooting, night hunting and predator or hog hunting, although the video did not include a controlled nighttime flash comparison.

The reviewers’ overall conclusion was emphatic: for someone shopping for a dedicated 5.56 suppressor, they considered the VENT Spiritus 5.56i a leading option. In their assessment, its principal advantage was the combination of strong perceived sound suppression, low back pressure and reduced recoil rather than a tradeoff among those characteristics.

Testing the PTR VENT Spiritus 5.56i

Silencer Shop assembled several 5.56 hosts to evaluate how the Spiritus performed across different barrel lengths and operating systems. The semiautomatic lineup included a 14.5-inch low-dwell AR-15, a 10.3-inch Daniel Defense MK18 and a 12.5-inch AR-15 build. The team also installed the suppressor on a 5.56 Mini Fix bolt-action rifle.

This was a practical, shooter-impression review rather than an instrumented sound-pressure test. The conclusions about loudness, gas, recoil and flash were based primarily on what the participants heard, felt and observed at the range. The video did not present measured decibel readings, quantified back-pressure data or a controlled flash-test protocol.

The reviewers entered the test with prior experience using the VENT 1, VENT 2 and VENT 3. They said those models had performed well for them and wanted to determine whether the smaller Spiritus could deliver a similar experience on 5.56 rifles.

Inconel Construction and PIP Technology

The reviewers identified two attributes that distinguish the Spiritus 5.56i within the VENT line: its compact dimensions and its Inconel construction. According to the video, the suppressor weighs 15.2 ounces, measures 6 inches long and has a diameter of 1.625 inches.

They contrasted its Inconel construction with the titanium used in other VENT models discussed in the video. In the reviewers’ view, Inconel makes the Spiritus better suited to higher rates of fire and harder use. The video did not include a durability test, firing schedule or temperature measurement, so that assessment was not independently demonstrated during this particular range session.

The Spiritus also uses PTR’s Purposely Induced Porosity technology. The reviewers described the PIP structure informally as being similar to a metal sponge, with gas moving through the suppressor’s porous internal material. They expected this design to help lower perceived sound and reduce the amount of gas driven back through a semiautomatic host.

Performance on a 14.5-Inch AR-15

The first live-fire evaluation used a 14.5-inch low-dwell AR-15. Initial shots produced an immediate positive reaction from the Silencer Shop team. One reviewer called the performance “pretty good” before removing his hearing protection for subsequent shooting. The participants later fired an entire magazine rapidly and continued to describe the rifle as unusually quiet from their positions at the range.

These comments represent the reviewers’ subjective experience and should not be interpreted as a hearing-safety determination. Suppressed 5.56 gunfire can still present a risk of hearing damage, and the video did not include calibrated sound measurements establishing that the configuration was hearing-safe.

Back pressure was one of the strongest themes in this portion of the review. Multiple shooters reported that they did not perceive gas at the firing position. After testing both 55-grain M193 and 62-grain green-tip ammunition, one participant summarized his reaction by saying, “There’s no gas and there’s no sound.” Although deliberately conversational and not a measured technical claim, the quote captures how strongly the configuration impressed the group.

The reviewers were also surprised by the rifle’s recoil behavior. They repeatedly described the gun as having little or no perceptible recoil and noted that it remained exceptionally stable during rapid fire. One participant said it “feels like a cheat code,” while another later compared the recoil reduction to the effect of running a muzzle brake.

No formal recoil measurements or unsuppressed control strings were shown, so these findings should be understood as shooter observations. Within that limitation, the Spiritus appeared to give every participant a notably flat, controllable shooting experience.

M193 and 62-Grain Ammunition Observations

The team initially fired 55-grain M193 ammunition through the 14.5-inch rifle and then switched to 62-grain green-tip ammunition. They anticipated that the ammunition change might alter the experience, but the overall reaction remained positive.

With the 62-grain load, the reviewers again emphasized the apparent absence of gas and the low perceived report. They did not report a cycling problem, significant change in recoil or other negative behavior resulting from the ammunition change.

The video did not provide side-by-side sound measurements, accuracy data or velocity figures for the two loads. It therefore supports the narrower conclusion that the reviewers found the suppressor effective and the host comfortable with both ammunition types during their range session—not that the two loads performed identically under controlled conditions.

Heat and Mirage During Rapid Fire

After firing the 14.5-inch rifle rapidly, the suppressor was hot enough that the reviewers used a heat-resistant mitt to remove it. Despite that heat, one shooter remarked that he did not observe much mirage through the LPVO.

This was an informal observation rather than a structured thermal or optical test. The team did not document the round count, suppressor temperature or time interval involved. Still, the limited mirage was noteworthy to the shooter because the suppressor felt very hot while producing less visible distortion through the optic than he expected.

Testing on an Untuned 10.3-Inch MK18

Moving from a 14.5-inch barrel to a 10.3-inch Daniel Defense MK18 created a more demanding suppressed 5.56 configuration. The reviewers identified the rifle as having an H2 buffer, a non-adjustable gas block and a smaller gas port associated with newer examples of the platform. They described the host as essentially untuned for this specific suppressor test.

The shorter MK18 was perceptibly louder than the 14.5-inch rifle, which the team expected given the loss of four inches of barrel. That difference did not change their overall assessment. They still considered the sound performance very good for the configuration.

More significantly, the reviewers continued to report little perceived gas at the shooter. They found that notable on a short-barreled, non-adjustable host. The rifle functioned without the team changing buffer weights or adjusting the gas system, and they reported no cycling issues during the footage shown.

The MK18 also remained stable under fire. The reviewers repeatedly commented on its limited movement, with one declaring, “This can deletes recoil.” As with the 14.5-inch test, the video did not quantify recoil reduction or include a controlled comparison against the same rifle unsuppressed. The statement reflects the reviewer’s strong subjective response to the way the rifle handled.

Results From the 12.5-Inch AR-15

The 12.5-inch host was a more deliberately configured rifle. According to the video, it used a BRT gas tube and a Superlative Arms gas block. That setup makes it different from the factory-style, non-adjustable MK18 and is important context when evaluating gas and recoil behavior.

During firing, the reviewers again focused on how little the rifle moved. They said the sight picture was not merely returning quickly after recoil; in their perception, the gun was barely moving away from its original position.

Because this host incorporated gas-system modifications, its behavior cannot be attributed solely to the suppressor. Even so, the result was consistent with what the team experienced on the less-adjustable 10.3-inch rifle: across the hosts tested, they repeatedly associated the Spiritus with low perceived gas and a flat shooting cycle.

Muzzle-Flash Observations and Low-Light Use

While testing the 12.5-inch rifle, the reviewers discussed how gas moving through the PIP structure may help limit secondary ignition and visible muzzle flash. Based on what they observed, they expected the Spiritus to be a viable choice for low-light applications such as night hunting for hogs or coyotes.

The video did not show a dedicated dark-environment test, record multiple flash events from a fixed camera position or compare the Spiritus directly with another suppressor. Accordingly, this portion of the review is best treated as a favorable field observation rather than a definitive comparative flash result.

It nevertheless adds an important dimension to the review. The team was evaluating more than sound alone: they viewed flash behavior, gas management and rifle stability as interconnected parts of the suppressor’s overall performance.

Direct-Thread Testing and HUB Compatibility

Most of the testing shown was conducted with the Spiritus installed by direct thread. The reviewers explained that, in their experience, suppressors often perform best when a mounting system introduces as little obstruction as possible into the blast chamber. Their reasoning was that preserving more internal volume gives muzzle gas room to expand.

At the same time, the Spiritus 5.56i is HUB compatible. As the team noted, this allows owners to use a preferred compatible mounting system rather than being limited to direct thread.

The distinction matters when interpreting the video. The review demonstrates the experience the team obtained primarily with a direct-thread setup. A different HUB-compatible mount could affect blast-chamber volume, overall length, weight or performance, but the video did not compare mounting systems.

The team also joked about the common concern that direct-thread suppressors can loosen during firing. They did not report the Spiritus walking loose in the testing shown.

Spiritus 5.56i on a Mini Fix Bolt Action

For the final host, Silencer Shop installed the suppressor on a 5.56 Mini Fix bolt-action rifle. Unlike an AR-15, the manually operated action remains closed when the cartridge fires and does not cycle a buffer or gas system at the shooter’s ear.

The bolt action was quieter than a conventional semiautomatic AR configuration, as the reviewers expected. However, one participant said the difference was not as large as he had anticipated. That observation reflects both the quieter nature of the closed-action host and the team’s favorable impression of the Spiritus on the AR-15s.

The video did not directly meter or synchronize the bolt-action and semiautomatic shots. Its value here is experiential: after hearing the Spiritus on three AR configurations, the reviewers believed those semiautomatic hosts had performed closely enough to the bolt action that the contrast was less dramatic than expected.

Sound Suppression and Low Back Pressure Without the Expected Tradeoff

The central conclusion of the Silencer Shop review was that the Spiritus combined qualities the team had historically viewed as difficult to achieve simultaneously. They described an older assumption that a suppressor could be quiet or have low back pressure, but not both.

Based on this range session, the reviewers believed the Spiritus 5.56i delivered strong perceived sound suppression without producing the gas blowback they expected from many conventional 5.56 suppressors. They reported this experience across a 14.5-inch low-dwell rifle, an untuned 10.3-inch MK18 and a tuned 12.5-inch build.

That consistency appears to have mattered more to the team than peak performance on any single host. The shorter MK18 was louder, and the gas-system configurations were not identical, but the overall pattern remained favorable: limited perceived gas, stable recoil behavior and reliable cycling throughout the shooting shown.

The Reviewers’ Final Verdict

Silencer Shop’s final assessment was direct. One reviewer concluded, “If you’re in the market for a 5.56 can, PTR Spiritus is the way to go,” and another immediately agreed.

They characterized the VENT Spiritus 5.56i as a suppressor that lets a shooter “have your cake and eat it too.” In context, that meant achieving the combination of low perceived back pressure and strong subjective sound performance that they once considered a compromise. Reduced recoil was the third part of that conclusion, with the team describing the rifles as unusually flat and controllable.

The video was not a laboratory comparison, and it did not establish measured sound, back-pressure, flash or recoil rankings against competing suppressors. Its strength is the breadth of practical host testing. The Spiritus was fired on three different AR-15 barrel lengths, with tuned and untuned gas configurations, two 5.56 ammunition types and a bolt-action rifle.

Across those combinations, the reviewers’ reaction remained consistently positive. They considered the 14.5-inch configuration exceptionally quiet and soft shooting, acknowledged the increased report from the 10.3-inch MK18, and still praised the short-barreled rifle’s gas management and function. They also responded favorably to the 12.5-inch host’s stability and apparent flash behavior.

Taken together, those observations form the broader product story presented in the review: the team believed the Spiritus brought sound suppression, low perceived back pressure, limited recoil, compact dimensions, HUB compatibility and Inconel construction into one dedicated 5.56 suppressor. Their final verdict was based not on a single impressive firing string, but on the suppressor delivering a similar overall experience across several substantially different firearms.
